Percentage Calculator

All the percentage questions you get in daily work: what is 15% of 2,000, what percent one number is of another, the percentage increase or decrease, and adding or removing a percentage.

How to use the Percentage Calculator

  1. Pick the line that matches your question.
  2. Type the two numbers.
  3. The answer appears at the end of the line.

Formula

X% of Y = X ÷ 100 × Y X is what % of Y = X ÷ Y × 100 % change = (New − Old) ÷ Old × 100

Example

A price that goes from Rs 200 to Rs 250 has increased by 25%.

Four percentage sums people need most

  • What is 15% of 8,000? Multiply 8,000 × 0.15 = 1,200
  • 1,200 is what percent of 8,000? Divide 1,200 ÷ 8,000 × 100 = 15%
  • Change from 8,000 to 9,200? (9,200 − 8,000) ÷ 8,000 × 100 = 15% increase
  • Add 15% to 8,000? 8,000 × 1.15 = 9,200

Why up and down are not equal

If a price rises 20% and then falls 20%, it does not come back to where it started. Rs 1,000 becomes Rs 1,200, then 20% off Rs 1,200 is Rs 960. Always calculate the percentage on the number you are starting from.

Percentage points or percent?

If a bank rate moves from 10% to 12%, it has risen by 2 percentage points, but by 20% of the old rate. News reports sometimes mix the two, so check which one is meant.
