Formula
Example
A Rs 5,000 item at 20% off and then an extra 10% off costs Rs 3,600 — a total discount of 28%, not 30%.
How double discounts really work
A “20% + 10% off” sale applies 10% to the already reduced price. On Rs 5,000 you first get Rs 1,000 off (Rs 4,000), then 10% of Rs 4,000 off (Rs 400). The final price is Rs 3,600, a total discount of 28%, not 30%.
Planning a sale as a shop owner
Before announcing a discount, check your margin. If your margin is 25% and you give 20% off, you keep only about 6% of the price, and less after card charges. Use the profit margin calculator with the sale price to see what you will actually earn.
Flat discount or percentage?
Rs 500 off on a Rs 5,000 item and 10% off are the same amount. Flat discounts look bigger on cheap items, and percentages look bigger on expensive items. Pick the one that sounds larger to your customer.

Frequently asked questions
Do two discounts add up?
No. The second discount is applied to the already reduced price, so 20% + 10% equals 28% in total.
How do I calculate 15% off Rs 2,400?
Multiply 2,400 by 0.15 to get Rs 360. The sale price is Rs 2,040.
How do I find the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount). Rs 2,040 ÷ 0.85 = Rs 2,400.
