How to Choose POS Software for a Supermarket in Pakistan
The right point-of-sale system saves a mart owner hours every day and stops stock and cash from quietly going missing. Here is what to check before you buy one.

1. Billing speed at the counter
In a busy mart the queue is the first thing customers notice. Ask for a live demo and bill ten items yourself. A good POS adds an item the moment it is scanned, lets you change quantity with one key, and prints the receipt in a few seconds. If the cashier has to use the mouse for every item, it will slow down at rush hour.
2. Barcode and QR scanning
Any standard USB or Bluetooth barcode scanner should work without special drivers. Check that the software can also handle items without a barcode — loose vegetables, rice by weight, home-made products — through quick search or short codes. If you make your own products, you should be able to print your own barcodes.
3. Stock that updates itself
- Every sale should reduce stock automatically, and every purchase entry should add to it.
- Low-stock alerts tell you what to reorder before the shelf is empty.
- Products should sit in clear categories (grocery, dairy, household, cosmetics) so reports make sense.
- Expiry dates matter for food, medicine and cosmetics.
4. Control over cashiers
Most cash problems in shops are small and daily. Separate logins for the owner, accountant and each cashier mean every bill is linked to a person. Cashiers should not be able to change prices, delete bills or give large discounts without permission.
5. Opening and closing every shift
At the start of a shift the cashier records the opening cash. At closing, the POS should print a Z-report: total sales, cash, card and wallet payments, returns and discounts. If the cash in the drawer does not match the report, you know the same day — not at the end of the month.
6. Returns, receipts and your shop details
The receipt is your advertisement. It should show the shop name, address, phone number and return policy, and ideally a QR code. Returns should be linked to the original bill so the same item cannot be returned twice.
7. FBR and sales tax
Larger retailers in Pakistan (Tier-1 retailers) are required to integrate their POS with FBR so each invoice is reported. If this applies to you, ask the vendor clearly whether they support FBR integration and who handles it. Smaller shops should still be able to show sales tax correctly on the bill — our free GST calculator shows how it is worked out.
8. Reports the owner will actually read
- Daily and monthly sales.
- Profit by product and by category.
- Best and slowest sellers.
- Stock value — how much money is sitting on your shelves.
9. Backups, offline use and support
Ask what happens if the internet goes down, and how your data is backed up. Then ask who you call when something stops working at 9 pm on a Saturday. Local support on WhatsApp from the people who built the software is worth more than a long feature list.
Before you pay, run the demo for one full day with your own products. You will learn more in that day than from any brochure.
